Shahrukh KhanShahrukh Khan addresses a capacity crowd during his visit to Yale University as a Chubb Fellow.

New Heaven (US). Some 1700 people gathered to hear the famous Indian actor Shahrukh Khan speak in the Shubert Theater of Yale University. Khan visited the Yale campus as a Chubb Fellow. The Chubb Fellowship is designed to foster among the undergraduates of Timothy Dwight College (one of Yale’s twelve residential colleges) and Yale University an interest in public affairs.

Incidentally Yale also becomes the first US institution to honour the star.

The star started his lecture with a reference to his detention at the airport. "Whenever I start feeling too arrogant about myself, I always take a trip to America. The immigration guys kick the stars out of stardom."

Taking incidents from his own life the actor offered words of inspiration to the students. He shared his own frustrations and despair with criticism of his work, advising to, "Hang on to who you are inside when the world is tearing you apart." He continued, "Life as a creator will always be a tight rope so do not try to feed your stomach with creativity. It is food for the soul not for the stomach."Shahrukh Khan

The star also advised his young audience to, “Learn to laugh at yourselves, too. Never become cynical about yourself and your life. Becoming cynical about your life is the single most destructive thing you can do to it.” He told them not to be be afraid to “defy conventions” or to “walk alone if necessary.”

He also highlighted the importance of parents in one's life.

“I lost my parents very early in my life, and I miss them dearly,” Khan said. “So all of you who still have yours: Don’t listen to them; fool them if you must; a bit of lying is also welcome. But make sure you cherish what you have because when you don’t have them — like me — you really miss someone to be rude to, someone you can take for granted, someone to say and do whatever you wish with. You miss the comfort of being loved unconditionally. … If you want to survive life, it is best to begin to respect the gift of love right now.”

“My hope for all of you is that you retain a lifelong love of learning, that you never cease to dream exciting and inspiring dreams, and — when you fail — you fail well enough to succeed the next time. Don’t be afraid of being afraid: Be afraid of not facing your fears and failures,” Khan urged the students.
