Srinagar. Water transport in the Jhelum river became operational after a gap of about five decades as the first water boat ferried people from Peerzoo in the uptown to Chattabal Veer in the downtown today.

In a bid to boost heritage tourism in Srinagar city, the state government has started introductory water transport in river Jhelum. The two hour cruise started from Peerzoo restaurant and finished at Chattabal Veer in old city. Tourists travelling on this route can get familiar with the heritage and the architecture of Srinagar.

The Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, Asgar Samoon, said, "This water transport is quite historical and we have today revived this transport from Pantha Chowk to Chattabal and in coming days we are going to extend it. We hope it will be successful and will attract more tourists. We are also trying to ply this transport privately. It is a good alternate transport system." He also announced that soon a Shikara Marathon would be organized from Pantahchowk to Chattabal and new initiatives like floating restaurants and cargo boast would be deployed.

This water transport was the lifeline of commuters between Srinagar and other townships of Kashmir valley a decades back. Over the years the system got extinct. The aim of reviving this transport system is to ease the traffic on roads.
