TeethIndian mothers concerned about foods causing cavities.

Mumbai. A recently conducted survey by GFK Mode, a market research firm, brings to light the concerns of Indian mothers towards the prevalence of cavities amongst children. This survey was commissioned by Colgate-Palmolive (India) Limited, a big player in Oral Care. The research reveals, which dentists agree with - two food varieties – modern day foods and everyday foods – are reasons that cause cavities.

78 per cent mothers voiced concerns that everyday foods like dal, dalia – otherwise considered healthy – can cause cavities too. Dentists unanimously (94 per cent) agreed that modern day foods like burgers, pizza, etc, are major reasons causing cavities.

The study also highlights the acute need for superior Oral Care in the country. 98 per cent dentists who were interviewed as part of the survey agreed that children need higher level of Oral Care to cope with changing food habits.

Dr. Ashok Dhoble, Hon. Secretary General, Indian Dental Association said, “As lifestyle evolves with time, there is also a change in the eating habits of children. This change in the foods that children eat today significantly contributes to cavities as seen in the research findings. You will be surprised to know that even daily foods like rice, dal, fruits can cause cavities. Its important for children to be made aware of basics of oral hygiene like the importance of brushing teeth twice a day, cleaning teeth and gums properly with toothpastes that offer advanced cavity protection.”

Besides modern and everyday food items, it was also found in the research that children eating chocolates continues to add to mothers’ woes. Nearly 90 per cent mothers agreed that sweets, candies and chocolates can lead to cavities.
